Shornemead Fort ( 12 mins / 16mm on digital video, looped two-channel installation / 2023 )

Built in the 1860s, Shornemead Fort guarded the entrance to the Thames and was intended to defend this gateway into London from seaborne invasion. Though the fort was abandoned in the 1950s and partially destroyed with dynamite during a training exercise by the Royal Engineers during the 1960s, the original 11 casemates, built to house large artillery cannons, remain. The site has since become prone to vandalism and subsidence, but there are still visible marks of the impact that war, trade and industry have had on this uniquely British landscape.
